PROLOGUE
Steve Dalton froze; he couldn’t take in what was happening to him. The
first brick that shattered in front of his eyes left him momentarily
bemused and then, almost in slow motion, he realized that someone was
shooting at him! – This only happened to hoodlums or army personnel;
yet here he was late morning in a sleepy Cheshire village, being shot at
in broad daylight; a respectable businessman who paid his taxes and who
definitely hadn’t joined the British Army!
Although he had no Forces training, instinct cut in, he dropped to the
floor and rolled under a parked van as even more brickwork exploded
above him. The initial shock had ebbed a little but now he was acutely
aware of his heart thumping in his chest and, to his surprise, that his
senses were almost cat-like. Survival mode was now fully engaged, thanks
to adrenalin, and he was not ready to die!
Where were the shots coming from? – The marksman, whoever he was, had
to be on the roof of one of the shops on the opposite side of the main
street. Thirty feet away there was an entrance to a pub car park that
had once been the coach access to the old inn. There was no cover but,...

I was working my way through the summer reading list when Lord of the
Flies brought me to a halt. I wasn’t ready to start another book when
I finished that one. I’d never read anything so layered with meaning:
it haunted me, and I needed to think about it some more. But I didn’t
want to spend the whole break doing nothing but reading and watching TV.
